How to Take Measurements at Home | African Tailor UK

If you're ordering bespoke fashion online, getting your measurements right is the single most important step. Whether you're working with a tailor in Manchester UK or ordering from anywhere in the world, accurate measurements mean your outfit fits perfectly the first time — no adjustments, no stress.

At Deright Fashion Store, your trusted African tailor based in Manchester, we've helped hundreds of customers across the UK, Europe, and beyond get picture-perfect bespoke pieces, and it always starts with good measurements. Here's how to do it yourself at home, step by step.

What You'll Need

  • A soft, flexible measuring tape (not a metal DIY one)
  • A friend or family member to help (self-measuring is possible but less accurate)
  • A well-fitted top or fitted clothing to measure over
  • A mirror, if measuring alone
  • Pen and paper (or your notes app) to record numbers immediately

Key Measurements to Take

1. Chest/Bust — Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest, keeping it level all the way round. Don't pull too tight — the tape should sit snugly but comfortably.

2. Waist — Measure around your natural waistline, usually the narrowest part of your torso, just above your belly button. Stand naturally; don't suck in.

3. Hips — Measure around the fullest part of your hips and bottom, keeping the tape parallel to the floor.

4. Shoulder Width — Measure from the edge of one shoulder to the edge of the other, across your back.

5. Sleeve Length — From the shoulder edge, down to where you'd like the sleeve to end — full length, three-quarter, or short.

6. Length (Garment Specific) — For dresses, agbadas, kaftans, and gowns, measure from the shoulder (or desired starting point) down to where you want the hem to fall.

7. Neck — Wrap the tape around the base of your neck, where a collar would normally sit.

Tips for Getting It Right

  • Always measure over well-fitted clothing, not bulky layers
  • Keep the tape snug but never tight enough to leave a mark
  • Take each measurement twice to double-check
  • Stand naturally — don't hold your breath or adjust your posture
  • When in doubt, send us a quick video call and we'll guide you through it live

Why Accurate Measurements Matter for Bespoke Fashion

As an African tailor specialising in handcrafted occasion wear, every piece we create — from agbadas to Ankara dresses to occasion wear — is made exclusively to your personal measurements. Unlike ready to wear pieces that come in standard sizes, bespoke garments are built around you, so precision at this stage saves time, money, and disappointment later.

Ready to Order?

Once you've got your measurements, send them across and we'll take care of the rest. As a leading tailor in Manchester UK, we combine traditional craftsmanship with modern precision on every order — whether it's a wedding outfit, a family celebration piece, or something for the Deright Fashion Academy, our team is here to help every step of the way.
