Ankara: bold, bright and versatile

Ankara is the cotton wax print loved across Africa and the diaspora. It's breathable, easy to care for and comes in endless bold patterns.

Best for: everyday wear, birthdays, casual owambe, children's outfits, and accents like the Ankara trim on a senator top.

Lace: elegant and celebratory

• Consider comfort. If you'll be dancing all night, avoid very heavy or scratchy fabrics next to the skin.
• Check the care label. Beaded lace and Aso Oke usually need dry cleaning. Ankara and cotton are easy to wash at home.
• Buy enough fabric. Ask your tailor how many yards you need before buying. Gowns with trains or agbadas need much more than a simple two-piece.
